SUMMARY:Black Suffragists - the Untold Story (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to attend our FREE online presentation. \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society is combining February’s Black History Month and March’s Women’s History Month in this exclusive online program. \n\n\n\nOn March 10 at 7 P.M.\, Jean Speight\, a local historian\, will share the history of some of the Black women who played important roles in the suffragist movement whose names are not mentioned in history books. SUMMARY:The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US 7 pm On Wednesday\, February 7\, 2018 when Jean Speight\, local historian and a retired New Castle School District teacher\, presents\, “The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen.” The program features a power point and lecture. FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.\n\n\n\n“In 1925\, an Army War College Study of black troops in World War l concluded that “blacks would never have what it takes to fly aircraft of any type.” It stated that “they lacked intelligence and were cowards under combat conditions.” The War Department tradition and policy mandated segregation of African Americans into separate units staffed by white officers. These units were limited to specific jobs\, such as cooks\, truck drivers\, and construction workers.” J. Speight \n\n\n\nTuskegee Pilots World War II\n\n\n\nThe Tuskegee Airmen were the very first African American U.S. Army Air Force unit to fight in World War II. The unit was comprised primarily of African Americans flyers and the other African American soldiers necessary to keep the aircraft in the air. These men had to fight for the right to serve as pilots in the U.S.Military. A large number of soldiers in this unit came from Western Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, call the Society at 724 658-4022. \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:Traveling Shoes: Looking at African American Migration
DESCRIPTION:The migration saw the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to parts of the North\, Midwest and West.\n\n\n\nThe year 1910\, when 7 million of the 8 million African Americans lived below the cotton curtain. African Americans sought to build a new place for themselves\, to take control of their own destiny. They put on their “traveling shoes”\, pulled up roots and journeyed to places unknown. \n\n\n\nMost people have some reference of migration in their past\, but none that can match that of the African American. White Americans outside the south would be faced with a new culture and an opportunity to bridge the races in the new world. \n\n\n\nEvent Speaker Jean Speight offers a power point and lecture that addresses many absorbing questions during this presentation at the Lawrence County Historical Society. For example: \n\n\n\n\nDid the migration achieve the aim of those who put on those “traveling shoes”?\n\n\n\nWere the millions who left better off having done so?\n\n\n\nWas what they left behind worth what confronted them in the places to which they fled?\n\n\n\n\nEVENT SPEAKER: S. Jean SpeightFor several years\, Historical Society member\, S. Jean Speight\, has been creating exciting programs for the Society for Black History Month. Mrs. Speight\, a retired New Castle elementary school teacher\, has presented programs locally\, throughout Pennsylvania\, and in other states. \n\n\n\nJoin us on February 8 for this brand new program.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nDoes this sound interesting?
