SUMMARY:Rededication Ceremony: Western Reserve Harbor Pennsylvania Canal Historical Marker
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence County Historical Society’s Historic Sites Committee is pleased to announce its rededication ceremony of the Western Reserve Harbor (Northern Terminus) Pennsylvania Canal Historic Marker.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe original historic marker mysteriously disappeared from its site several years ago. The canal itself stretched from Presque Isle Bay in Erie to the Ohio River in Beaver and was a vital link between the Great Lakes\, the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. \n\n\n\nThe Rededication Ceremony will take place on May 13\, 2024\, beginning at 5:00 PM and will feature remarks from Emcee Dr. Robert Waddington\, LCHS Board President David J. Dean\, historical background by Ronald HalacknaIn\, and comments from several Public Officials. \n\n\n\nIn anticipation of possible inclement weather\, the actual ceremony will be held at the New Castle School of Trades\, US 422\, 4117 Pulaski Road\, New Castle PA 16101. \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public and all are encouraged to attend.\n\n\n\nDATE/TIME: May 13\, 2024 beginning at 5:00 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION: New Castle School of Trades\, US 422\, 4117 Pulaski Road\, New Castle PA 16101 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:Trial by Sweat and Slag: Hard Lessons in Archaeology at the West Point Foundry's Blast Furnace
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence County Historical Society’s Historic Sites Committee is delighted to announce a special presentation by esteemed archaeologist\, Aaron Kotlensky\, on July 10\, 2023\, 7:00 PM\, at the Medure History Annex\, 408 North Jefferson Street. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to delve into the history of the West Point Foundry’s blast furnace\, guided by the award-winning archaeologist and native son\, Aaron Kotlensky. The Historical Society warmly welcomes anyone interested in our shared industrial heritage to join this illuminating meeting.\n\n\n\nThe event\, titled “Trial by Sweat and Slag: Hard Lessons in Archaeology at the West Point Foundry’s Blast Furnace” promises to illuminate the audience with insights from Mr. Kotlensky’s rigorous investigation into the historic West Point Foundry’s blast furnace in Cold Spring\, New York. \n\n\n\nBetween 2004 and 2005\, Mr. Kotlensky and a team of graduate students from Michigan Tech’s Industrial Archaeology and Heritage program undertook the challenging task of archaeologically exploring the charcoal-fueled furnace. Despite the complex nature of the project\, owing to the collapsed condition of the stack and surrounding features\, the team discovered answers unattainable by research alone. This presentation promises to share those discoveries\, illustrating the value of industrial archaeology and the dedication required to unearth lasting results. \n\n\n\nMr. Kotlensky\, a Western Pennsylvania native\, has been instrumental in the field of cultural resources consulting and has served as the archaeologist for PennDOT Districts 11-0 and 1-0 since 2021. He has been an active member of the Society for Industrial Archeology (SIA) since 2004\, earning the esteemed Robert M. Vogel Prize in 2014 for his work on the West Point Foundry project. Mr. Kotlensky also notably organized the SIA’s annual conference in Houston\, Texas\, in 2017 and their Fall Tour in Northwestern Pennsylvania in 2022. \n\n\n\nFor additional details about the meeting\, please visit the Lawrence County Historical Society’s website at lawrencechs.org \n\n\n\nAbout Lawrence County Historical SocietyLawrence County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of Lawrence County. The Society organizes various events\, lectures\, and tours throughout the year\, offering a wealth of learning opportunities for its members and the wider community. \n\n\n\nDate: July 10\, 2023Time: 7 – 8:30 pmFREE to the Public \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:History of THE BLACK HAND in Lawrence Co.
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about this notorious organization at an educational presentation by the Lawrence County Historical Society in partnership with Challenges–Options in Aging and sponsored by the Almira Foundation.\n\n\n\nJust before 1900 there was a great wave of immigration from Europe. Recruiters for various industries frequently went to Ellis Island to find laborers. Some Italian immigrants\, with experience or skill in stone quarrying\, were thus brought to Hillsville in Lawrence County\, where the limestone operations were said to be the most extensive in the world at that time. \n\n\n\nThere also came with these decent\, hardworking men a few of the criminal element. In their homeland they had been a part of a “society of honor\,” stressing loyalty and obedience to their leaders. In America\, the society was given the name “The Black Hand.” \n\n\n\nHere’s some background information from our website: https://www.lawrencechs.org/museum/the-black-hand/ \n\n\n\nRESERVATIONS: While reservations are not required\, we suggest you reserve a seat by calling LCHS (724) 658-4022 on Tuesday\, Thursday\, or Saturday between 11am and 4pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDATE OF EVENT: Friday\, April 14\, @ 1:00 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION OF EVENT: CHALLENGES – Options in Aging2706 Mercer Road\, New Castle PA 16105 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting?
