SUMMARY:Lawrence County Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Lawrence County Historical Society\, 408 North Jefferson St.\, New Castle\, on Tuesday\, May 14 at 7 pm when Zenaida Bench will present a program about the history of the Lawrence County Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration and its founder’s \, Mother Alexandra’s history. This program is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nLocated just outside Ellwood City in Wayne Township\, the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration is a monastery for women under the jurisdiction of The Orthodox Church in America. It was founded in 1967 by Mother Alexandra (the former Princess Ileana of Romania) whose dream it was to provide a place where American Orthodox women from all ethnic backgrounds could come to live the monastic life and benefit from a liturgical cycle in English. Since that time\, her vision has been fulfilled. The nuns\, many of whom are converts to Orthodoxy\, as well as the monastery’s many visitors\, span a variety of backgrounds. \n\n\n\nMother Alexandra\n\n\n\n Princess Ileana\, the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie\, was born in Bucharest\, Romania in 1909. During her childhood\, she lived through the harsh realities of World War I. With her mother and sisters\, she would visit the soldiers in the hospitals and on troop trains\, praying with them. She also helped the Red Cross as an interpreter. In 1947\, she with her whole family\, was exiled from Romania by the Communists\, being told they could leave the country with whatever they could carry or be confined in a monastery until they were executed. They lived in Switzerland and then came the United States. \n\n\n\nIn 1964\, the property in Wayne Township\, PA\, was purchased\, and in 1967\, after Sister Ileana was tonsured into monastic life as Mother Alexandra\, she established the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration. She lived to see Communism fall in Romania in 1989\, and was able to make a return visit to her homeland in 1990. Mother Alexandra died on January 21\, 1991 and is buried in the monastery cemetery. \n\n\n\nOUR PRESENTER: Zenaida Bench\, became an Eastern Orthodox Christian in 1991. After visiting the Monastery at that time\, she visited every year\, often introducing “this peaceful and holy place to friends.” In 1993\, she earned an MA in Theology at the Ecumenical Institute in Baltimore\, MD. The following year she became the assistant to the Dean and the director of admissions there. Retiring in 2017\, she moved to Ellwood City where she now resides at the monastery as the resident volunteer assistant to the Abbess. \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? Share with your friends!

SUMMARY:Back in the Day: Growing up in the Fifties
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 13 @ 7 pm for a nostalgic evening of the 1950’s \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society will present a program on March 13 at 7 p.m. about growing up in the fifties in New Castle. \n\n\n\n“Back in the Day: Growing up in the Fifties” is the title of Lou Palumbo’s latest book which takes one back in time to an era of a bustling downtown\, stay-at-home moms\, and playing with friends without the help of video games and cell phones. The program will bring back memories of everything from the milk man\, carnivals\, drive-in-theaters\, to collecting toy trains. \n\n\n\nPalumbo is the owner of the Underground Railroad Shoppe on Wilmington Road. Since collecting trains from a young age\, he decided to open his store in 1985. It is full of vintage and new trains\, everything needed for layouts and collections\, and a beautiful O gauge train layout in a large back room which is open to the public from November to January. He writes a monthly column called “Views from the Underground” for “Classic Toy Trains” magazine. \n\n\n\nThis nostalgic evening is free and open to the public. His latest book about growing up in the fifties along with his first book\, “I’ve Never Met a Train I Didn’t Like\,” will be available that evening for purchase. \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society is located at 408 N. Jefferson St. For more information call 724-658-4022. \n\n\n\nUnderground Railroad Shoppe Website: https://www.undergroundrrshop.com/ \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? Share with your friends!

SUMMARY:Larry Pugh: Black History in America 1620 to Present
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, February 13 at 7:00 pm for our FREE program “Larry Pugh: Black History in America 1620 to Present”\n\n\n\nMost of the 10.5 million slaves who landed in North America came from Central and South America\, not from Africa. In fact\, about 380\,000 slaves came by boat from Africa to North America. Pugh will give facts and figures about the Black experience here from 1600 to current times. He will speak of the long struggle of Blacks in America. \n\n\n\n“For over 200 years Blacks in America were not allowed to learn to read. Many could read and write in their native languages.” – Larry Pugh \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \n\n\n\nLarry Pugh graduated from Westminster College with a degree in history and a minor in science in 1965. Three of the four Pugh siblings graduated from Westminster. His mother\, Bessie Pugh\, brought her children here from Georgia where the school they attended only went through eighth grade. He received a Master’s degree from Howard University in European history in 1967. He attended Howard University because he wanted the Black Experience as there were only two Black students attending Westminster at the time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLarry was a football All-American three years at Westminster. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns where his football career ended due to injuries. He was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in South Bend\, Indiana in 1998\, the second year small college athletes were admitted. He is the only Lawrence County athlete ever inducted in the Football College Hall of Fame. \n\n\n\nPugh taught at New Castle for 32 years\, first at West Side\, then Ben Franklin\, and finally at the high school where he retired in 1998. After retirement\, he ran the Fatherhood program for Children’s Advocacy Center from 2010-2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nDoes this sound interesting? Share with your friends!

SUMMARY:The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US 7 pm On Wednesday\, February 7\, 2018 when Jean Speight\, local historian and a retired New Castle School District teacher\, presents\, “The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen.” The program features a power point and lecture. FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.\n\n\n\n“In 1925\, an Army War College Study of black troops in World War l concluded that “blacks would never have what it takes to fly aircraft of any type.” It stated that “they lacked intelligence and were cowards under combat conditions.” The War Department tradition and policy mandated segregation of African Americans into separate units staffed by white officers. These units were limited to specific jobs\, such as cooks\, truck drivers\, and construction workers.” J. Speight \n\n\n\nTuskegee Pilots World War II\n\n\n\nThe Tuskegee Airmen were the very first African American U.S. Army Air Force unit to fight in World War II. The unit was comprised primarily of African Americans flyers and the other African American soldiers necessary to keep the aircraft in the air. These men had to fight for the right to serve as pilots in the U.S.Military. A large number of soldiers in this unit came from Western Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, call the Society at 724 658-4022. \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:Uncles At War
DESCRIPTION:Uncles at War: the Pacific\, Panama Canal & the Atlantic\n\n\n\n“Uncles at War” While doing research on family history\, Dr. Nichols discovered information on his uncles that focused not only on their experiences but the details of World War II on three different theaters of the war: The Pacific Islands\, the Panama Canal\, and the Atlantic Ocean. The program will be more than their story because their experiences in the air force\, on the islands\, and in the canal zone\, provide an insight to what many persons who fought in this war had to deal with as well as its impact on their families at home. \n\n\n\nJohn A. Nichols\, PhD\n\n\n\nDr. John A. Nichols\, professor emeritus of History (Slippery Rock University)\, currently is a destination/special interest speaker on cruise ships of topics as diverse as the Ephesus in the time of St. Paul or Native Americans on the Caribbean islands to more modern events such as the building of the Panama Canal and tourism in the 21st Century. \n\n\n\n Photos provided courtesy of Dr. John A. SUMMARY:Genealogy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive workshop and discover what possibilities might lie in your family history!\n\n\n\nThe Dr. Seuss book\, Are You My Mother? pokes fun with a baby bird trying to find his mother. But what about a grandmother\, or great-grandmother\, or great-great-grandmother? When trying to trace your family history\, where do you start? By laying some groundwork\, we can find our ancestors who were able to place themselves in situations that would eventually land us here today. \n\n\n\nHenley Bros. & Paden Company circa 1890 Hillsville\, Pennsylvania.\n\n\n\nOur heritage is valuable if we are to understand the social grouping from which we have come and to which we belong. One of the late board members of the county’s Historical Society\, Anita DeVivo\, stated that heritages act as geological layers\, upon which new layers of society are built. Each layer is a representation of a much larger group. To have a foundation of belonging to the larger group\, we must find our place in these layers and allow ourselves the opportunity to study the Native American and immigrant populations who have allowed us to live today. The value of heritage is expressed as we locate ourselves within those layers\, and we discover how each ancestor influenced who we are today. \n\n\n\nOn October 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Medure Annex of the Lawrence County Historical Society\, Executive Administrator Andrew Henley will be instructing a free Genealogy Workshop which will allow you to figuratively place a trowel in your hands and begin digging up some of your family’s history. Through this process\, you will be able to set foundations for yourself and your family\, educate yourself on what the Society has to offer\, and troubleshoot questions about genealogical barriers. Henley will be exhibiting what possibilities you might uncover in the layers and how you are able to showcase them. \n\n\n\nCome and find out more and what possibilities might lie in your family’s history! \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society is located at 408 N. Jefferson St. in New Castle. \n\n\n\nPhoto credits:  “Henley Bros. & Paden Company” c. 1890 Hillsville\, PA\, Henley Family Archives \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? Share with your friends!
