SUMMARY:History of Judaism in Lawrence County
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 5 from 7-8:30 pm when Eric Lidji\, a representative of the Heinz History Center\, presents on the History of Judaism in Lawrence County.\n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS: In the early 20th century\, Western Pennsylvania had more small town Jewish communities than any other region in America. In fact\, it had almost ten percent of all the small town Jewish communities in the country. Lawrence County was home to two of these communities\, in New Castle and Ellwood City. By looking at the specific example of these two communities\, this talk will try to explain what made this region so attractive to Jewish immigrants and so conducive to Jewish communities. \n\n\n\n\nWhat led to the growth of these communities in the early 20th century and their decline in the late 20th century?\n\n\n\nAnd\, most importantly\, what was life like in the decades in between?\n\n\n\n\nEVENT SPEAKER:  Eric Lidji is a researcher based in Pittsburgh. For the past five years\, he has been an archival consultant for the Rauh Jewish History Program & Archives at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh\, where his research has focused on Jewish families\, businesses and communities in Western Pennsylvania. He is the curator of the family history website Generation to Generation and a researcher for the Small Towns Jewish History Project\, which is documenting Jewish life in small towns throughout Western Pennsylvania. Lidji is the author of the book John Riegert and an editor of Her Deeds Sing Her Praises: Profiles of Pittsburgh Jewish Women. \n\n\n\nMark your calendar now for our April 5th free program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:Traveling Shoes: Looking at African American Migration
DESCRIPTION:The migration saw the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to parts of the North\, Midwest and West.\n\n\n\nThe year 1910\, when 7 million of the 8 million African Americans lived below the cotton curtain. African Americans sought to build a new place for themselves\, to take control of their own destiny. They put on their “traveling shoes”\, pulled up roots and journeyed to places unknown. \n\n\n\nMost people have some reference of migration in their past\, but none that can match that of the African American. White Americans outside the south would be faced with a new culture and an opportunity to bridge the races in the new world. \n\n\n\nEvent Speaker Jean Speight offers a power point and lecture that addresses many absorbing questions during this presentation at the Lawrence County Historical Society. For example: \n\n\n\n\nDid the migration achieve the aim of those who put on those “traveling shoes”?\n\n\n\nWere the millions who left better off having done so?\n\n\n\nWas what they left behind worth what confronted them in the places to which they fled?\n\n\n\n\nEVENT SPEAKER: S. Jean SpeightFor several years\, Historical Society member\, S. Jean Speight\, has been creating exciting programs for the Society for Black History Month. Mrs. Speight\, a retired New Castle elementary school teacher\, has presented programs locally\, throughout Pennsylvania\, and in other states. \n\n\n\nJoin us on February 8 for this brand new program.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:Twenty Extraordinary African American Women!
DESCRIPTION:“The history of women’s contributions to this nation has not been limited to the struggle of women’s right alone. Our nation owes whatever prosperity\, enlightenment and success it has achieved to the hard work and dedication of millions upon millions of women who have given their lives and their efforts to its service”  \n\n\n\n… from Great Speeches by American Women (Ed. James Daley)\n\n\n\nTheir names are not familiar to most people. Their faces are not seen in our history books\, yet each of them played a valuable part in shaping America. \n\n\n\nThrough conversation and a Power Point presentation\, we can expand our knowledge of African American Women beyond Rosa Parks to include others that came before and paved the way for a Rosa Parks. \n\n\n\nAfrican American women like all women have spoken out and spoken up throughout American History. This involvement has spanned centuries. Event Speaker Jean Speight will share information and give a voice to twenty of these Extraordinary African American Women. \n\n\n\nEVENT SPEAKER: S. \n\n\n\nJoin us on February 10 for this brand new program.\n\n\n\n\nFannie Lou Hamer 1964\n\n\n\nCharlayne Hunter Gault 2011\n\n\n\nUS Rep Barbara Jordan 1970s\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credits: “Fannie Lou Hamer 1964-08-22” by Warren K. SUMMARY:A Controversial Skeleton: Intrigue & Arguments
DESCRIPTION:His was one of the most complete ancient skeletons ever found when it was discovered in 1996. It was also one of the most controversial. \n\n\n\nOver 9\,000 years ago\, a man died near the bank of the Columbia River in Kennewick\, Washington. A stone projectile lodged in his hip. \n\n\n\nThe skeleton triggered a nine-year legal battle between scientists\, the US government and Native American tribes who claimed the Kennewick Man as one of their ancestors. \n\n\n\nThe King Beaver Archaeological Society invites you to this evening of entertainment\, intrigue\, and discovery!\n\n\n\nFormer FBI agent and true crime author Jim Fisher presents the legal arguments and political intrigue surrounding the clash. \n\n\n\nFisher is a graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School\, a former FBI agent\, Professor Emeritus at Edinboro University and the author of eleven books on crime\, law\, forensic science\, policing\, criminal investigation and writing. \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:The BentProp Project: search for the MIA of WWII
DESCRIPTION:On April 6\, 2014\, 6:30 PM at the Lawrence County Historical Society Museum\, the King Beaver Archeology Society will be hosting guest speaker Reid Joyce of Valencia\, Pennsylvania. Mr. Joyce will be sharing his experiences as a member of the BentProp Project. \n\n\n\nDuring World War II\, American airmen lost their lives in the western Pacific. The ultimate fate of hundreds of these men remains a mystery today.\n\n\n\nOceans and jungles don’t give up information about long-lost aircraft without a fight. Planes are buried under sand and silt on the ocean floor\, or sink into jungle mud and are covered by years of forest growth. \n\n\n\nThe difficult task of finding lost airmen seems insurmountable\, but the men of the BentProp Project are not deterred. The BentProp Project is a self-funded team of volunteers who are dedicated to locating those missing in action from World War II within the South Pacific Palau Islands. They search the waters and jungles for clues that may lead to lost aircraft. Their goal is to identify wreck sites and remains of men who gave their lives for their county. \n\n\n\nMr. Joyce has been an active SCUBA member on five missions and is credited by “Vanished” author Wil S. Hylton as the Bent Prop team archive wizard. He is a retired research psychologist who did contract research for the Air Force and Navy human-engineering and personnel labs. He developed portable computer systems used for troubleshooting and maintenance on fighter aircraft\, and developed techniques to allow better and safer performance under Nuclear / Biological / Chemical threat conditions. \n\n\n\nPlease join us for this fascinating presentation.\n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting?
