SUMMARY:A Constant Pleasure - Theodore Roosevelt in Oyster Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Free Lecture on Wednesday\, November 14 at 7pm. Presentation by Amy Verone discussing Theodore Roosevelt’s public career and his family life in Oyster Bay\, New York.\n\n\n\nAmy Verone grew up in New Castle and graduated from Neshannock High School in 1974. She majored in History at Washington & Jefferson College and earned a Masters in American Studies from George Washington University. Verone worked at the National Archives and the Smithsonian Institution before joining the National Park Service in 1991. \n\n\n\nVerone served as the Chief Curator at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site\, the home of Theodore Roosevelt\, for 24 years until retiring in 2014. Her presentation\, “A Constant Pleasure\,” covers Theodore Roosevelt’s public career and his family life in Oyster Bay\, New York. She discusses his family life growing up\, how he was raised\, and how he ended up at Oyster Bay. He loved the area so much that when he married\, he chose to live “in the wilds of Long Island.” He made it his “Summer White House\,” coining that term “Summer White House.” \n\n\n\nIn 1909\, after his presidency\, Roosevelt went to Africa for a year\, then returned to Sagamore Hill where he resided the rest of his life. He is buried nearby. His widow lived at Sagamore Hill for 29 years after his death. \n\n\n\nFREE and OPEN to the PUBLIC \n\n\n\nLOCATION: Lawrence County Historical Society\, 408 Jefferson Street\, New Castle PA 16101 \n\n\n\nFor more information. call the Society at 724 658-4022 \n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Public Domain\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1917359 \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:Uncles At War
DESCRIPTION:Uncles at War: the Pacific\, Panama Canal & the Atlantic\n\n\n\n“Uncles at War” While doing research on family history\, Dr. Nichols discovered information on his uncles that focused not only on their experiences but the details of World War II on three different theaters of the war: The Pacific Islands\, the Panama Canal\, and the Atlantic Ocean. The program will be more than their story because their experiences in the air force\, on the islands\, and in the canal zone\, provide an insight to what many persons who fought in this war had to deal with as well as its impact on their families at home. \n\n\n\nJohn A. Nichols\, PhD\n\n\n\nDr. John A. Nichols\, professor emeritus of History (Slippery Rock University)\, currently is a destination/special interest speaker on cruise ships of topics as diverse as the Ephesus in the time of St. Paul or Native Americans on the Caribbean islands to more modern events such as the building of the Panama Canal and tourism in the 21st Century. \n\n\n\n Photos provided courtesy of Dr. John A. SUMMARY:Genealogy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive workshop and discover what possibilities might lie in your family history!\n\n\n\nThe Dr. Seuss book\, Are You My Mother? pokes fun with a baby bird trying to find his mother. But what about a grandmother\, or great-grandmother\, or great-great-grandmother? When trying to trace your family history\, where do you start? By laying some groundwork\, we can find our ancestors who were able to place themselves in situations that would eventually land us here today. \n\n\n\nHenley Bros. & Paden Company circa 1890 Hillsville\, Pennsylvania.\n\n\n\nOur heritage is valuable if we are to understand the social grouping from which we have come and to which we belong. One of the late board members of the county’s Historical Society\, Anita DeVivo\, stated that heritages act as geological layers\, upon which new layers of society are built. Each layer is a representation of a much larger group. To have a foundation of belonging to the larger group\, we must find our place in these layers and allow ourselves the opportunity to study the Native American and immigrant populations who have allowed us to live today. The value of heritage is expressed as we locate ourselves within those layers\, and we discover how each ancestor influenced who we are today. \n\n\n\nOn October 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Medure Annex of the Lawrence County Historical Society\, Executive Administrator Andrew Henley will be instructing a free Genealogy Workshop which will allow you to figuratively place a trowel in your hands and begin digging up some of your family’s history. Through this process\, you will be able to set foundations for yourself and your family\, educate yourself on what the Society has to offer\, and troubleshoot questions about genealogical barriers. Henley will be exhibiting what possibilities you might uncover in the layers and how you are able to showcase them. \n\n\n\nCome and find out more and what possibilities might lie in your family’s history! \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society is located at 408 N. Jefferson St. in New Castle. \n\n\n\nPhoto credits:  “Henley Bros. & Paden Company” c. 1890 Hillsville\, PA\, Henley Family Archives \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? Share with your friends!

SUMMARY:Crime Exhibit (repeating exhibit) with Special Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Lawrence County has been home of many notorious crimes\, especially unsolved ones. \n\n\n\nJoin us for our new exhibit “CRIME”\n\n\n\nBegins Aug 22. Repeats on Aug 24\, Aug 26\, Aug 29\, Sept 2 from 11am-4pm. \n\n\n\nWith Special Lectures on August 26 and Sept 2 at 1pm. \n\n\n\nAUGUST 26 Special Lecture @ 1 pm by Intern on the Torso/Swamp Murderers and the Black Hand \n\n\n\nSEPTEMBER 2 Special Lecture @ 1 pm by Intern on Irene Schroeder and the current crime statistics \n\n\n\nTHE EXHIBIT\n\n\n\nThis exhibit\, put together by a group of interns at the society\, focuses on three different groupings of crimes as well as the current crime statistics\, hoping to open discussion on what our community has done and is doing to combat crime. \n\n\n\nTORSO & SWAMP MURDERSThe first focus is on the Torso Murderers and Swamp Murderers\, located in West Pittsburg. The connections of these deaths with Cleveland\, Ohio once stumped famous investigator\, Eliot Ness. Information surrounding these unidentified bodies is now being uncovered and put on display for the public to see. \n\n\n\nBLACK HANDFollowing these murders is the infamous Black Hand\, which surrounded their narrative around the Hillsville community. With the murders of the game warden\, Seeley Houk\, and William Duff\, these murders began to shed light on an mafia-like organization that existed within the county. On display\, will be testimonials of those involved in the Pinkerton Detective Agency-led trials of 1907. \n\n\n\nIRENE SCHROEDERWithin the early part of the 1930s\, times were fluid\, and many lived for the thrill. That was so for the Bonnie and Clyde-like couple of Irene Schroeder and Glenn Dague as they robbed stores within the area and killed police officer Brady Paul. It was not until the two were apprehended in a shootout in Arizona that they were brought back to New Castle and sentenced to death by electrocution\, making Schroeder the first female to be executed in this way in Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n21st CENTURYUnfortunately\, as we enter into the 21st century\, crime is still evident within our community. Through the work of our District Attorneys and other leaders within our county\, we are now battling evolved forms of crimes. \n\n\n\nGET YOUR TICKETS TODAY! Johnson\, one of New Castle’s “Princes” was an equal in statue to steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie and coke magnate Henry Clay Frick. According to his obituary\, despite his stature in the community\, Johnson was known as “a man who was easily approached and he was known by his fellow townsmen as “George.” \n\n\n\n In 1901\, he formed the American Car and Ship Hardware Manufacturing Co. which eventually expanded into Johnson Bronze with his sons William L. and Charles H. SUMMARY:Writing Workshop and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Writing Workshop and Book Signing\n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society will host a free memoir writing workshop and book signing Saturday\, August 1st from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM in its annex building. \n\n\n\n“Creative Writing with Chris” – 11 am\n\n\n\nThe workshop\, Creative Writing with Chris\, by Christine O’Neill Susany will be held from 11:00 AM until 12:00 noon. A native of New Castle\, Susany now lives in New Mexico where she works as a writer and editor. She is a graduate of Mohawk High School (Mt. Jackson\, PA) and Kent State University (Kent\, Ohio). \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide instructions on how to preserve and share your family history. According to Susany\, “Everyone has a story to tell.” Genealogy can help us discover the facts of our past\, but facts are dry\, dull\, and boring. Memories add the spice of life to those facts. \n\n\n\nFind out the importance of telling your story while there’s still time. Explore the many ways of recording a family or personal history\, and challenge participants to pursue the task of preserving and sharing their family histories. \n\n\n\nBook Signing – noon\n\n\n\nAfter the workshop\, J. Nelson McConahy will have a book signing for his memoir\, Dynamite! A Blaster’s History. This book chronicles his experiences working at the American Cyanamid’s powder mill during the late 1960s\, and was edited by Christine O’Neill Susany. \n\n\n\nAuthor J. Nelson McConahy\n\n\n\nTo read more about the book and author\, here is a link to a New Castle News article. \n\n\n\nThe event will be held in the Historical Society’s annex building behind the Greer Clavelli Mansion at 408 N. Jefferson Street\, New Castle\, PA. Parking is located off E. Wallace Avenue. \n\n\n\nPhoto credits: “diary writing” by Fredrik Rubensson is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? Share with your friends!

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Meet Ted Toles Jr and Author Michael Swank
DESCRIPTION:Living on Borrowed Time: The Life and Times of Negro League Player Ted Toles Jr\n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society\, 408 North Jefferson Street\, New Castle\, is sponsoring a book signing on Saturday\, February 7th from 1pm to 4pm. \n\n\n\nMeet New Castle Indians player Ted Toles\, Jr. and the author of his life story\, Michael T. His passion for sports began at an early age\, and evolved into a focus on baseball and the history of the game.
