SUMMARY:The Year that Made America
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence County Historical Society is pleased to present author and lecturer Thomas McMillan to discuss his recent book\, “The Year That Made America” \n\n\n\nDECIDE SOON. ADVANCED TICKETS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.Seating is limited\, so get your tickets now! \n\n\n\nFREE FOR STUDENTS! Deadline to apply is Oct 6. See order LINK below. \n\n\n\nJoin us October 8 and learn about Seven Critical Months in 1776\n\n\n\n“The Year That Made America” tells the untold story of how America’s declaration of independence hinged on seven critical months in 1776 and the courageous votes that changed the world forever. \n\n\n\nThis gripping account reveals the precarious path to American independence though a series of pivotal dates that history has nearly forgotten. While July 4th claims the glory\, the actual vote for independence came on July 2nd – and even that historic moment almost didn’t happen. From January 1776’s publication of Common Sense to December’s darkest hours of the Revolution\, McMillan reconstructs the dramatic months when rebellious colonies transformed into a new nation. \n\n\n\nThis timely narrative strips away the myths to expose the raw political courage that launched a revolution. From heated Congressional debates to the dangerous aftermath of declaring independence. \n\n\n\nMcMillian delivers a fresh perspective on America’s founding that resonates powerfully with today’s political challenges.\n\n\n\nDuring the Event\, books will be available for sale by the author. \n\n\n\n\nThe Year That Made America\n\n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\n\n\n\nDATE / TIME: October 8\, 2025 from 6 to 7:30 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION: LCHS Annex\, 408 N Jefferson St\, New Castle PA 16101 \n\n\n\nADMISSION PRICE: $5 for LCHS Members$10 for Non-MembersFREE for Students (deadline to apply is Oct 6) \n\n\n\n3 Easy Ways To Make Reservations / Purchase Tickets\n\n\n\n\nON LINE NOW at: https://www.lawrencechs.org/store/tickets\n\n\n\nAt our OFFICE: Tuesday\, Thursday\, & Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. SUMMARY:Western Pennsylvania's Role in America's Independence
DESCRIPTION:DECIDE SOON. ADVANCE TICKETS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.Seating is limited\, so get your tickets now!\n\n\n\nFREE FOR STUDENTS!See order button below.\n\n\n\n\n\nBy placing Western PA at the center of the story\, we gain new insight into the American Revolution.\n\n\n\nIn May 1775\, some 250 years ago\, several North American colonies had just begun fighting a war for independence against King George and the British Empire. Many of the most popular retellings of this war center on events that took place along the Atlantic Coast but the area we now know as Western Pennsylvania was at the center of many rebel leaders’ plans for an independent nation. \n\n\n\nUnderstanding the upper Ohio River Valley in the late 1700s is the keystone to understanding the whole arc of the then geographic past\, present and future of the United States. \n\n\n\nThe Revolutionary War was fundamentally a war fought over land and the Ohio River was an important waterborne transportation link to the new nation’s success. By placing Western PA at the center of the story\, we gain new insight into the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society invites you to join us for this information and fascinating historical lecture by Professor David H. Lehman\, Professor of History\, Westminster College. \n\n\n\nFor more information on Dr Lehman\, read this brief article from the Westminster College Student Newspaper titled: New history professor has history living in Amish country \n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\n\n\n\nDATE/TIME: May 28\, 2025 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION: Medure Annex of the Lawrence County Historical Society\, 408 N. SUMMARY:Our Nation's Guest - Marquis de Lafayette
DESCRIPTION:From July 1824 to September 1825\, the French Marquis de Lafayette\, the last surviving major general of the American Revolutionary War\, made a tour of all of the 24 states in the United States. \n\n\n\nOur presentation ‘Our Nation’s Guest’ tells the story of the General’s 14-month tour of America as the guest of the nation he helped found. His tour included visits to: Butler PA (March 1825)\, Washington PA (May 1825)\, Uniontown PA (May 1825)\, Pittsburgh PA (May 1825)\, Waterford PA (June 1825)\, and Erie PA (June 1825). \n\n\n\nWho was Lafayette and why did he receive such accolades and warm welcomes everywhere he went on this long journey? The answer lies in the fact that Americans of the time knew the vital contributions he made to his adopted nation. He was a financier\, soldier\, diplomat\, and political theorist. \n\n\n\nPresenter Richard Arthur\, a Butler County native\, is currently the curator of the Eagle Hotel and Stagecoach Stop Museum\, part of the living history campus of Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society. Arthur holds a BA degree from Allegheny College and a MA from George Washington University. \n\n\n\n* LAYFAYETTE: Financier\, Soldier\, Diplomat\, Political Theorist *This lecture will attempt to refresh the memory of this great man.During and after the American Revolution\, Lafayette strongly supported human rights for all\, especially religious freedom and equality for women. He was an abolitionist and always fought for Liberty\, Equality\, and Freedom. \n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\n\n\n\nDATE: April 11\, 2025 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION: Medure Annex of the Lawrence County Historical Society\, 408 N. SUMMARY:The Kittanning Raid of 1756
DESCRIPTION:DECIDE SOON. ADVANCE TICKETS ARE REQUIRED.Seating is limited\, so get your tickets now! Deadline to purchase on line: March 8\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society is pleased to announce its upcoming educational speaker event\, “The Kittanning Raid of 1756: The First Military Action Authorized by Pennsylvania and How it Changed the Future of the American Colonies” \n\n\n\nPresented by Professor Brady J. Crytzer\, author\, and host of Dispatches: The Podcast of the Journal of the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nCrytzer’s presentation is best described by the publisher:“On the morning of September 8\, 1756\, a band of about three hundred volunteers of a newly created Pennsylvania militia led by Lt. Col. John Armstrong crept slowly through the western Pennsylvania brush. The night before they had reviewed a plan to quietly surround and attack the Lenape\, or Delaware\, Indian village of Kittanning. The Pennsylvanians had learned that several prominent Delaware who had led recent attacks on frontier settlements as well as white settlers previously taken prisoner were at the village.” \n\n\n\nIn War in the Peaceable Kingdom: The Kittanning Raid of 1756\, historian Brady J. Crytzer follows the two major threads that intertwined at Kittanning: The French and Indian War that began in the Pennsylvania frontier\, and the bitter struggle between pacifist Quakers and those Quakers and others—most notably\, Benjamin Franklin—who supported the need to take up arms. It was a transformational moment for the American colonies. Rather than having a large\, pacifist Pennsylvania in the heart of British North America\, the colony now joined the others in training soldiers for defense. Ironically\, it would be Pennsylvania soldiers who\, in the early days of the American Revolution\, would be crucial to the survival of George Washington’s army. \n\n\n\nRESOURCES for “Dispatches: The Podcast of the Journal of the American Revolution” \n\n\n\n\nDISPATCHES is now available on YouTube from the Journal of the American Revolution’s channel: https://www.youtube.com/@journaloftheamericanrevolution\n\n\n\n\n\nPodcasts available onAPPLE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dispatches-the-podcast-of-the/id1451236351PODBEAN: https://jardispatches.podbean.com/TUNEIN: https://tunein.com/radio/Dispatches-The-Podcast-of-the-Journal-of-the-American-Revolution-p1969527/\n\n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society invites you to join us for this informative and fascinating historical lecture. \n\n\n\nDATE/TIME: March 12\, 2025 / 6:00-7:00 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION: LCHS ANNEX – 408 N Jefferson St\, New Castle PA 16101 \n\n\n\nTICKET PRICE$5 for Students$10 for Adults \n\n\n\n3 WAYS TO PURCHASE YOUR TICKET \n\n\n\n\nONLINE 24/7 at https://www.lawrencechs.org/store/tickets/online purchase deadline is March 8\n\n\n\nBy TELEPHONE: at 724-658-4022 any Tuesday\, Thursday or Saturday from 11am to 4pm\n\n\n\nIN PERSON At the LCHS Annex\, 408 N Jefferson Street\, New Castle only on Tuesdays\, Thursdays and Saturdays between 11 AM and 4 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:Telling Western Pennsylvania History Through Slavery and Abolition
DESCRIPTION:DECIDE SOON. ADVANCE TICKETS ARE REQUIRED. Seating is limited\, so get your tickets now! Deadline to purchase on line: Nov 3\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society is pleased to announce its upcoming educational speaker event\, “TELLING WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA HISTORY THROUGH SLAVERY AND ABOLITION” as presented by David H. Lehman\, Assistant Professor\, Westminster College. \n\n\n\nWestern PA has been a crossroads for traveling humans for over 19\,000 years. During the 17th and 18th centuries\, traveling south to north through Western PA took on an extra layer of meaning. For people fleeing enslavement\, Western PA was a place where they had to dodge bounty hunters\, find allies\, and connect to a final route out of the country and away from the jurisdiction of fugitive slave laws. \n\n\n\nUniquely in Western PA\, some who were making their escape up the Atlantic Coast\, along with those who turned inland at Philadelphia\, might meet those who were making their escape up the Ohio River Valley or via Cumberland MD. Towns in Western PA were meeting places and switching yards where these escapees from multiple points of origin could find each other and work together to set up their next steps towards freedom. \n\n\n\nExploring this distinctive place in history of freedom-seeking\, abolitionist activism\, and civil disobedience can show us the long arc of our history here in Western PA as a place that welcomed strangers and offered help to people in their time of trial. \n\n\n\nSPEAKER: David H. Lehman is an assistant professor in the history department at Westminster College (Pa.) since 2023. He has a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BA from Goshen College (Ind.). Lehman’s teaching interests include early U.S. history\, American Indian history and culture\, environmental studies\, modern empires\, race in U.S. history\, world geography\, modern China\, and public history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe hope you join us for this information event! \n\n\n\nDATE/TIME: November 6\, 2024 / 6:00-7:30 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION: LCHS ANNEX – 408 N Jefferson St\, New Castle PA 16101 \n\n\n\nTICKET PRICE$5 for Members$10 for Non-members \n\n\n\n3 WAYS TO PURCHASE YOUR TICKET \n\n\n\n\nONLINE 24/7 at https://www.lawrencechs.org/store/tickets/online purchase deadline is November 3\n\n\n\nBy TELEPHONE: at 724-658-4022 any Tuesday\, Thursday or Saturday from 11am to 4pm\n\n\n\nIN PERSON At the LCHS Annex\, 408 N Jefferson Street\, New Castle only on Tuesdays\, Thursdays and Saturdays between 11 AM and 4 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Attribution:Niagara\, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\, via Wikimedia Commons \n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence County Historical Society’s Historic Sites Committee is pleased to announce its rededication ceremony of the Western Reserve Harbor (Northern Terminus) Pennsylvania Canal Historic Marker.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe original historic marker mysteriously disappeared from its site several years ago. DESCRIPTION:Due to limited seating\, reservations are strongly encouraged. \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society’s Programs and Public Relations Committee is pleased to announce its upcoming ‘1794 Whiskey Rebellion’ speaker event. \n\n\n\nThe 1794 uprising of farmers and distillers in Western PA was in protest of a whiskey tax enacted by the US Federal Government. SUMMARY:Trial by Sweat and Slag: Hard Lessons in Archaeology at the West Point Foundry's Blast Furnace
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence County Historical Society’s Historic Sites Committee is delighted to announce a special presentation by esteemed archaeologist\, Aaron Kotlensky\, on July 10\, 2023\, 7:00 PM\, at the Medure History Annex\, 408 North Jefferson Street. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to delve into the history of the West Point Foundry’s blast furnace\, guided by the award-winning archaeologist and native son\, Aaron Kotlensky. The Historical Society warmly welcomes anyone interested in our shared industrial heritage to join this illuminating meeting.\n\n\n\nThe event\, titled “Trial by Sweat and Slag: Hard Lessons in Archaeology at the West Point Foundry’s Blast Furnace” promises to illuminate the audience with insights from Mr. Kotlensky’s rigorous investigation into the historic West Point Foundry’s blast furnace in Cold Spring\, New York. \n\n\n\nBetween 2004 and 2005\, Mr. Kotlensky and a team of graduate students from Michigan Tech’s Industrial Archaeology and Heritage program undertook the challenging task of archaeologically exploring the charcoal-fueled furnace. Despite the complex nature of the project\, owing to the collapsed condition of the stack and surrounding features\, the team discovered answers unattainable by research alone. This presentation promises to share those discoveries\, illustrating the value of industrial archaeology and the dedication required to unearth lasting results. \n\n\n\nMr. Kotlensky\, a Western Pennsylvania native\, has been instrumental in the field of cultural resources consulting and has served as the archaeologist for PennDOT Districts 11-0 and 1-0 since 2021. He has been an active member of the Society for Industrial Archeology (SIA) since 2004\, earning the esteemed Robert M. Vogel Prize in 2014 for his work on the West Point Foundry project. Mr. Kotlensky also notably organized the SIA’s annual conference in Houston\, Texas\, in 2017 and their Fall Tour in Northwestern Pennsylvania in 2022. \n\n\n\nFor additional details about the meeting\, please visit the Lawrence County Historical Society’s website at lawrencechs.org \n\n\n\nAbout Lawrence County Historical SocietyLawrence County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of Lawrence County.
