SUMMARY:1794 Whiskey Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:Due to limited seating\, reservations are strongly encouraged. \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society’s Programs and Public Relations Committee is pleased to announce its upcoming ‘1794 Whiskey Rebellion’ speaker event. \n\n\n\nThe 1794 uprising of farmers and distillers in Western PA was in protest of a whiskey tax enacted by the US Federal Government. Following years of aggression with tax collectors\, the region finally exploded in a confrontation that resulted in President George Washington sending in troops to quell what some feared could become a full-blown revolution.  \n\n\n\nThe Whiskey Rebellion is considered one of the first major tests of the authority of the newly formed US Government.\n\n\n\nHistory Professor Brady Crytzer\, Robert Morris University\, will provide an in depth study of this rebellion. A former resident of Lawrence County\, he has been a presenter previously at the Lawrence County Historical Society. The event will explore these and other documents when considering one’s estate planning. \n\n\n\nReed D. Hennon is an attorney with over 35 years’ experience in estate planning and elder law\, providing comprehensive and caring counsel to his clients. His practice includes the preparation of Wills\, Trusts\, Powers of Attorneys\, and Health Care Powers. A large portion of his practice has been devoted to Asset Protection Trusts so that his clients\, and their families\, do not lose their life savings to long term and/or nursing home costs. \n\n\n\nAttorney Hennon is a summa cum laude graduate of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is also a graduate of the Temple University School of Law\, where he graduated with honors\, including receiving the Donahue Memorial Award for Estate Counseling. \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in western Pennsylvania\, Attorney Hennon resides in New Castle with his wife\, Lynn. DESCRIPTION:“The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe” dramatic presentation will take place on October 25\, 2023 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in the East Lodge Room. \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society and the New Castle Public Library have partnered to host an enchanting evening performance of Poe stories and poems by author Mark Dawidziak and his wife\, actress Sara Showman. There will be an audience live-chat and book signing following the performance. \n\n\n\n\nDawidziak and Showman\n\n\n\nDawidziak and Showman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Dawidziak and Sara Showman founded the Largely Literary Theatre Company in 2002. This repertoire theater company is dedicated to promoting literature\, literacy and live theater and includes works by Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe. \n\n\n\nMark is an internationally recognized Mark Twain scholar and has portrayed Twain on stage for more than 40 years. No less an authority than Ken Burns has said\, “Nobody gets Mark Twain the way Mark Dawidziak does”.  \n\n\n\nMark’s most recent book is the biography A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe. DESCRIPTION:Advance reservations are required as seating is limited. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us September 13 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm for a presentation of “Holocaust Survivors of Lawrence County: Stories of Resilience and Rebuilding.” \n\n\n\nLearn about three Holocaust survivors who immigrated to and settled in Lawrence County; how these survivors started families\, owned and operated businesses\, served as faith leaders and pillars of their communities\, and truly became a part of the fabric of the New Castle area. Although each survivor suffered unfathomable loss and trauma\, their stories show their own resilience and the endurance of the human spirit. \n\n\n\nBy learning their stories\, we all can do our part to “never forget” as we honor their lives and memories. \n\n\n\nEvent presenter: Christina Sahovey\, Operations Manager of the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh\, where she has worked since 2016. Stay and sit with your friends and neighbors on our porch and front lawn and watch the FIREWORKS display.\n\n\n\nRESERVE a TOUR and enjoy our new Wendell August Forge’s Hammered Aluminum exhibit (see details below regarding payment and reservations). \n\n\n\nSchedule of Events\n\n\n\n\n8 pm to 10 pm – Community Gathering and Food leading up to the fireworks display. DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence County Historical Society’s Historic Sites Committee is delighted to announce a special presentation by esteemed archaeologist\, Aaron Kotlensky\, on July 10\, 2023\, 7:00 PM\, at the Medure History Annex\, 408 North Jefferson Street. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to delve into the history of the West Point Foundry’s blast furnace\, guided by the award-winning archaeologist and native son\, Aaron Kotlensky. The Historical Society warmly welcomes anyone interested in our shared industrial heritage to join this illuminating meeting.\n\n\n\nThe event\, titled “Trial by Sweat and Slag: Hard Lessons in Archaeology at the West Point Foundry’s Blast Furnace” promises to illuminate the audience with insights from Mr. Kotlensky’s rigorous investigation into the historic West Point Foundry’s blast furnace in Cold Spring\, New York. \n\n\n\nBetween 2004 and 2005\, Mr. Kotlensky and a team of graduate students from Michigan Tech’s Industrial Archaeology and Heritage program undertook the challenging task of archaeologically exploring the charcoal-fueled furnace. Despite the complex nature of the project\, owing to the collapsed condition of the stack and surrounding features\, the team discovered answers unattainable by research alone. This presentation promises to share those discoveries\, illustrating the value of industrial archaeology and the dedication required to unearth lasting results. \n\n\n\nMr. Kotlensky\, a Western Pennsylvania native\, has been instrumental in the field of cultural resources consulting and has served as the archaeologist for PennDOT Districts 11-0 and 1-0 since 2021. He has been an active member of the Society for Industrial Archeology (SIA) since 2004\, earning the esteemed Robert M. Vogel Prize in 2014 for his work on the West Point Foundry project. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and hear three experienced STORYTELLERS weave tales certain to capture the imagination of the audience.\n\n\n\nSTORYTELLERS \n\n\n\n\nJudi Young-Tarowsky – a one-time New Castle native\, Judi received a Journalism degree from West Virginia University. She worked for newspapers in the Upper Ohio Valley for 25 years. Judi discovered storytelling in 2006 and has been active ever since. She is a member of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild and a past president of the same. Judi presently resides in Weirton WV.\n\n\n\nMisty Mator – better known as ‘Starla the Storyteller’\, captivates with timeless tales that teaches history\, celebrates culture\, inspires creativity\, and promotes moral values. Starla has appeared at Pittsburgh’s Alphabet Trails & Tales\, the Ellwood City Storytelling Festival\, the Beaver Tales Storytelling Festival\, and at numerous schools\, libraries\, and events.\n\n\n\nTim Hartman – a native Pittsburgher\, Tim has been professionally acting\, singing\, writing\, cartooning and storytelling since 1972. Known primarily for his Broadway stage work\, which includes A Tale of Two Cities and the Tony nominated Finian’s Rainbow\, Tim’s greatest joy is performing his own brand of stand-up comedy\, and storytelling for children and family audiences. Fritz\, MS\, RPA\, a local archaeologist and Principal Investigator at Quemahoning LLC\, will be presenting on the topic of: \n\n\n\n“Geospatial Reconstruction of the 1959-1960 Excavations of the Chambers Site (36LR0011)Edinburg\, Lawrence County\, Pennsylvania” \n\n\n\nArchaeological excavations at the Chambers site (36LR0011) were conducted in 1959 through 1960 by archaeologists from Carnegie Museum of Natural History and by members of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology. The investigation identified a Woodland Period burial mound and an 18th century Indian cemetery. Human remains and funerary objects removed from historic graves showed strong cultural affiliations to Indian groups that were known to have settlements in western Pennsylvania during the 18th century.  \n\n\n\nThe Chambers site is believed to be associated with Seneca and Delaware settlements along the Mahoning River that were collectively known as “the Kuskuskies Towns.” The Delaware Tribe of Indians is seeking to repatriate human remains and funerary objects that were removed from the Chambers Site under the authority of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).  \n\n\n\nAs part of the NAGPRA documentation\, the Delaware Tribe of Indians wished to relocate the site of the excavations. However\, detailed maps showing the locations of the burial mound and Indian cemetery were not preserved in archaeological archives. Using photographs of the archaeological excavations\, GIS software\, and methods of photogrammetry the locations of Carnegie Museum’s excavations were reconstructed on the modern landscape. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be able to join us for what promises to be an illuminating evening on June 5\, 2023\, at the Lawrence County Historical Society’s Medure History Annex.  \n\n\n\nDon’t miss out on this opportunity to explore Lawrence County’s fascinating history\, and learn from one of its leading experts. DESCRIPTION:DEADLINE TO DROP OFF ITEMS: April 15 – May 15 (see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society will be holding a Spring Yard Sale on the grounds of the Clavelli Heritage Cultural Center on May 20 from 9 am to 2 pm.\n\n\n\nSpring is here! And\, with Spring comes the dreaded seasonal ‘Spring House Cleaning’ tradition. Perhaps your ‘honey do’ list will include eliminating unused or unwanted items previously stored in your attic space and since forgotten. And let’s not forget that long overdue reorganization of your garage area and the purging of all those items that have accumulated over the winter months. \n\n\n\nIf this is what the coming months have in store for you\, the LCHS volunteers ask that you keep us in mind as you clean out those cupboards\, closets\, basements\, attics\, and garages. \n\n\n\nAny items you wish to contribute to the yard sale will be gladly accepted. (No clothing or bed/bath linens\, please.) All proceeds from the re-sale of these contributions will go directly to benefit the Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:Learn more about this notorious organization at an educational presentation by the Lawrence County Historical Society in partnership with Challenges–Options in Aging and sponsored by the Almira Foundation.\n\n\n\nJust before 1900 there was a great wave of immigration from Europe. Recruiters for various industries frequently went to Ellis Island to find laborers. Some Italian immigrants\, with experience or skill in stone quarrying\, were thus brought to Hillsville in Lawrence County\, where the limestone operations were said to be the most extensive in the world at that time. \n\n\n\nThere also came with these decent\, hardworking men a few of the criminal element. In their homeland they had been a part of a “society of honor\,” stressing loyalty and obedience to their leaders. The monument represents the valor of five regiments who\, battered and beaten from engagement months prior in Antietam and Fredericksburg\, triumphantly secured the Union line as part of Sickle’s army. \n\n\n\nThe story of the Irish Brigade is among the most popular told at Gettysburg. The iconic trefoil emblem of the United States’ Second Corps is proudly emblazed above the Irish Brigade marker. In his own words\, Thomas details travel with the ‘Roundheads’ as they marched through Maryland\, Virginia\, South Carolina\, Kentucky\, and Mississippi. Mike currently resides in Pittsburgh PA.\n\n\n\nDavid Brauer – with an extensive background in marketing for the largest highly protected risk insurance company\, a senior vice president with the largest insurance broker and a managing director of one of the largest casualty insurers\, David now spends his time as an author\, professional storyteller\, business consultant\, sales mentor and professional grandfather. He currently resides in Wexford PA.\n\n\n\nJudi Young-Tarowsky – a one-time New Castle native\, Judi received a Journalism degree from West Virginia University. She worked for newspapers in the Upper Ohio Valley for 25 years. Judi discovered storytelling in 2006 and has been active ever since. Stay and sit with your friends and neighbors on our porch and front lawn and watch the FIREWORKS display.\n\n\n\nSchedule of Events\n\n\n\n\n7 pm to 8 pm – FREE showing of vintage Warner Looney Tunes presented in the LCHS Annex.\n\n\n\n8 pm to 10 pm – Community Gathering and Food leading up to the fireworks display. Hot dogs\, ice cream\, cake and drinks served on the front porch of the museum beginning at 8 pm until the start of the fireworks display at 10 pm.\n\n\n\n7pm – Tours of the Clavelli Mansion are available. Reservations are required for the tour only. Cost for tour: $5. Advance reservations are required. Call 724-658-4022 any Tuesday\, Thursday\, Saturday to make your reservations.\n\n\n\n10 pm – FREE Fireworks display. Please stay and watch the fireworks with us from the Clavelli Mansion porch or lawn. Bring your chairs and/or blankets please.
