SUMMARY:Chambers Site Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Chambers Site Presentation – Historic Sites Committee Meeting\n\n\n\nCome and be a part of the conversation as the Historic Sites Committee delves into the historical sites scattered throughout Lawrence County\, Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\nOn June 5\, 2023 at 7 PM\, Brian L. Fritz\, MS\, RPA\, a local archaeologist and Principal Investigator at Quemahoning LLC\, will be presenting on the topic of: \n\n\n\n“Geospatial Reconstruction of the 1959-1960 Excavations of the Chambers Site (36LR0011)Edinburg\, Lawrence County\, Pennsylvania” \n\n\n\nArchaeological excavations at the Chambers site (36LR0011) were conducted in 1959 through 1960 by archaeologists from Carnegie Museum of Natural History and by members of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology. The investigation identified a Woodland Period burial mound and an 18th century Indian cemetery. Human remains and funerary objects removed from historic graves showed strong cultural affiliations to Indian groups that were known to have settlements in western Pennsylvania during the 18th century. \n\n\n\nThe Chambers site is believed to be associated with Seneca and Delaware settlements along the Mahoning River that were collectively known as “the Kuskuskies Towns.” The Delaware Tribe of Indians is seeking to repatriate human remains and funerary objects that were removed from the Chambers Site under the authority of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). \n\n\n\nAs part of the NAGPRA documentation\, the Delaware Tribe of Indians wished to relocate the site of the excavations. However\, detailed maps showing the locations of the burial mound and Indian cemetery were not preserved in archaeological archives. Using photographs of the archaeological excavations\, GIS software\, and methods of photogrammetry the locations of Carnegie Museum’s excavations were reconstructed on the modern landscape. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be able to join us for what promises to be an illuminating evening on June 5\, 2023\, at the Lawrence County Historical Society’s Medure History Annex. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss out on this opportunity to explore Lawrence County’s fascinating history\, and learn from one of its leading experts. We look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\nTo register for this event\, please call 724-658-4022\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? Share with your friends!

SUMMARY:Spring Yard Sale at Lawrence County Historical Society (2023)
DESCRIPTION:DEADLINE TO DROP OFF ITEMS: April 15 – May 15 (see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society will be holding a Spring Yard Sale on the grounds of the Clavelli Heritage Cultural Center on May 20 from 9 am to 2 pm.\n\n\n\nSpring is here! And\, with Spring comes the dreaded seasonal ‘Spring House Cleaning’ tradition. Perhaps your ‘honey do’ list will include eliminating unused or unwanted items previously stored in your attic space and since forgotten. And let’s not forget that long overdue reorganization of your garage area and the purging of all those items that have accumulated over the winter months. \n\n\n\nIf this is what the coming months have in store for you\, the LCHS volunteers ask that you keep us in mind as you clean out those cupboards\, closets\, basements\, attics\, and garages. \n\n\n\nAny items you wish to contribute to the yard sale will be gladly accepted. (No clothing or bed/bath linens\, please.) All proceeds from the re-sale of these contributions will go directly to benefit the Historical Society. Unsold items will be disposed of following the yard sale by our volunteer staff. \n\n\n\nItems can be dropped off at the LCHS Annex any Tuesday\, Thursday\, or Saturday between the hours of 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM beginning April 15th but no later than May 15th. \n\n\n\nEvent: Saturday\, May 20\, 2023Time: 9 am to 2 pmLocation: Lawrence County Historical Society Annex408 N. SUMMARY:History of THE BLACK HAND in Lawrence Co.
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about this notorious organization at an educational presentation by the Lawrence County Historical Society in partnership with Challenges–Options in Aging and sponsored by the Almira Foundation.\n\n\n\nJust before 1900 there was a great wave of immigration from Europe. Recruiters for various industries frequently went to Ellis Island to find laborers. Some Italian immigrants\, with experience or skill in stone quarrying\, were thus brought to Hillsville in Lawrence County\, where the limestone operations were said to be the most extensive in the world at that time. \n\n\n\nThere also came with these decent\, hardworking men a few of the criminal element. In their homeland they had been a part of a “society of honor\,” stressing loyalty and obedience to their leaders. In America\, the society was given the name “The Black Hand.” \n\n\n\nHere’s some background information from our website: https://www.lawrencechs.org/museum/the-black-hand/ \n\n\n\nRESERVATIONS: While reservations are not required\, we suggest you reserve a seat by calling LCHS (724) 658-4022 on Tuesday\, Thursday\, or Saturday between 11am and 4pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDATE OF EVENT: Friday\, April 14\, @ 1:00 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION OF EVENT: CHALLENGES – Options in Aging2706 Mercer Road\, New Castle PA 16105 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes this sound interesting? SUMMARY:The Irish Brigade at Gettysburg
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear the fascinating story surrounding THE IRISH BRIGADE AT GETTYSBURG …\n\n\n\nAs told by James Carnes\, graduate of Edinboro State College\, American History\, Government & Economics at Grove City High School for 20 years and Adjunct Professor at Grove City College for 16 years. \n\n\n\nTucked into the woods along Gettysburg National Military Park’s Sickle’s Avenue stands tall a Celtic cross\, shadowing the Irish Wolfhound. The monument represents the valor of five regiments who\, battered and beaten from engagement months prior in Antietam and Fredericksburg\, triumphantly secured the Union line as part of Sickle’s army. \n\n\n\nThe story of the Irish Brigade is among the most popular told at Gettysburg. The iconic trefoil emblem of the United States’ Second Corps is proudly emblazed above the Irish Brigade marker. While the Irish Brigade would suffer great casualties that day\, its story is remarkable and a great reminder of the Irish pride and legacy at Gettysburg. \n\n\n\nTickets are $5/ person.
