Mike currently resides in Pittsburgh PA.\n\n\n\nDavid Brauer – with an extensive background in marketing for the largest highly protected risk insurance company\, a senior vice president with the largest insurance broker and a managing director of one of the largest casualty insurers\, David now spends his time as an author\, professional storyteller\, business consultant\, sales mentor and professional grandfather. He currently resides in Wexford PA.\n\n\n\nJudi Young-Tarowsky – a one-time New Castle native\, Judi received a Journalism degree from West Virginia University. She worked for newspapers in the Upper Ohio Valley for 25 years. Judi discovered storytelling in 2006 and has been active ever since. She is a member of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild and a past president of the same. DESCRIPTION:The King Beaver Archaeology Group will hear the 1840s origins of Lawrence County\, presented by Lawrence County Historical Society president Andrew Henley at 6 pm. Sunday at the society\, 408 N. Jefferson St. \n\n\n\nIn 1849\, Lawrence County was created from parts of Mercer County to the north and Beaver County to the south. This creation\, however\, had implications statewide and nationwide. DESCRIPTION:Join us March 12 for a Seminar on the Ukrainian Refugee situation presented in local partnership with the Lawrence County Historical Society\, the Pleasant Hill Historians\, and Westminster College.\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the conflict in Ukraine continues\, millions of refugees are landing within the country of Poland. This Saturday\, March 12th at 12:00 PM EST\, Pleasant Hill Historians\, the Lawrence County Historical Society\, and Westminster College present a live discussion with Mikołaj Borkowski\, a PhD candidate located in Kraków\, Poland\, and Ryan Armstrong\, a History and Biology student at Westminster College\, New Wilmington\, Pennsylvania.  \n\n\n\nLast fall\, this partnership presented research from several internships relating to The Trees of Cascade Park\, The North Hill Historic District\, Artifacts at Quaker Falls\, and the Health of Lawrence County Immigrants. This continued partnership between the three organizations highlights how close this war is to Lawrence County and explores the challenges that these displaced people are now experiencing within Poland. \n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY\n\n\n\nRyan Armstrong\n\n\n\nRyan Armstrong\, History and Biology Student (Westminster College)\n\n\n\nArmstrong\, a Junior History and Biology double major at Westminster College\, will share his research with Pleasant Hill Historians as he analyzes the Melting Pot database from the Lawrence County Historical Society. This database lists the majority of immigrants who found their home in Lawrence County between 1906–1972. Armstrong is currently analyzing how the health of these immigrants was impacted based on their decisions to locate within New Castle or the surrounding communities. \n\n\n\nMikołaj Borkowski\n\n\n\nMikołaj Borkowski\, PhD Candidate (Jagiellonian University)\n\n\n\nBorkowski\, a Linguistics PhD candidate at Jagiellonian University\, will share his work with the Ocalenie Foundation as he begins teaching the Polish language to Ukrainian refugees. Even though we won’t be able to get together\, we can still enjoy a wonderful meal by our caterer\, the Faraone Brothers\, and support the Historical Society at the same time.  \n\n\n\nThe Take-Out Dinners are on Saturday\, December 11 from 4 pm to 6 pm. You don’t even need to get out of your car. Volunteers will direct you where to park and will deliver your meals.  \n\n\n\nDINNER PICK-UP DIRECTIONS: Please enter through the parking lot on Wallace Avenue and exit down the driveway onto Jefferson St.  \n\n\n\nYOU CAN VISIT THE MUSEUM TO SEE THE BEAUTIFULLY DECORATED DOWNSTAIRS: If you wish to come in to pick up your dinner and see the beautifully decorated downstairs\, you may park in the parking lot and enter the mansion by way of the front door. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to attend our FREE online presentation. \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence County Historical Society is combining February’s Black History Month and March’s Women’s History Month in this exclusive online program. \n\n\n\nOn March 10 at 7 P.M.\, Jean Speight\, a local historian\, will share the history of some of the Black women who played important roles in the suffragist movement whose names are not mentioned in history books. The black suffragists had to fight both racism and sexism during the suffragist movement. The movement tried to exclude Black suffragists so they could garner the support of southern white women\, but they showed up anyway. \n\n\n\nPRESENTER: Jean Speight. Mrs. Speight retired from the New Castle Area School District after 31 years. DESCRIPTION:Join us March 11. Be part of this hands-on workshop.\n\n\n\nRobert Stakeley is the Coordinator of the Archivist and Educational Programs at the Heinz History Center. For our program\, he welcomes people to bring in photos and slides that they want to know how to preserve. He says there is no real limit and envisions the program being an engaging\, facilitated discussion\, hands-on workshop. \n\n\n\n“We’ll get to peoples’ photos as time permits. So\, if someone has a scrapbook with photos in it – bring it in. Magnetic album with 100+ photos in it – bring it in. Slide carousel…”\n\n\n\nABOUT THE PRESENTER \n\n\n\nStakeley is the History Center Affiliates Program (HCAP) Coordinator at the Senator John Heinz History Center\, where he provides various levels of instruction and guidance for audiences. He oversees the Affiliates Program (HCAP)\, a program that assists more than 400 historically minded organizations\, including the Lawrence County Historical Society\, museums\, libraries\, preservationist groups\, community councils\, churches\, theaters\, etc.\, in achieving their goals. \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Stakeley had served as the Docent Program Coordinator at the History Center\, which involved providing training for the more than seventy-five History Center docents (teachers or tour guides). DESCRIPTION:Join us February 12 as we celebrate Black History Month with African Storytelling\n\n\n\nCharlotte Sheffield wears many hats. She is a teacher\, a funeral director\, an advocate and board director\, a beloved aunt\, a choir member\, an actress\, and an African storyteller. On Wednesday\, February 12 at 7 pm\, she will present a program on African Storytelling at the Lawrence County Historical Society as we celebrate Black History Month. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE PRESENTER \n\n\n\nSheffield has a bachelor’s degree in education from California State College PA\, and graduate degrees in education from California PA\, Hunter College NY\, and Cleveland State. Charlotte also has a diploma from The Pittsburgh School of Mortuary Science. She has taught and coordinated educational programs in various public and private schools. \n\n\n\nSheffield owns and operates the Charlotte A. Sheffield Funeral Home in New Castle. She is also an educator at her sister’s Day Care\, “A Mother’s Touch” in Sharon. Charlotte\, the 11th of 21 children of the Reverend Eugene and Bessie Sheffield\, has worked in many family owned and operated businesses as an educator and has mentored over 100 nieces\, nephews\, and great and grand nieces and nephews. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Lawrence County Historical Society\, 408 North Jefferson St.\, New Castle\, on Wednesday November 6\, 2019 at 7 pm for a look into the 19th Amendment to the Constitution (Women’s Right to Vote).\n\n\n\nThis program is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nDrs. Angela Lahr and Shannon Smithey of Westminster College will present the program. \n\n\n\nWomen’s right to vote was originally introduced in Congress in 1878\, but not passed until 1919. We celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification (which began May 21\, 1919\, with final ratification on August 26\, 1920). \n\n\n\nThis Lawrence County Historical Society program is co-sponsored by the Lawrence County League of Women Voters. \n\n\n\nOUR PRESENTERS: \n\n\n\nDr Angela Lahr\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Angela Lahr is an Associate Professor of History at Westminster College with a PhD from Northern Illinois University whose research interests include American religious history\, the history of the Cold War\, and women’s history. Author of Millennial Dreams and Apocalyptic Nightmares: The Cold War Origins of Political Evangelicalism (Oxford University Press\, 2007)\, she is currently researching the role of conscience and religion in the political activism of American women in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. \n\n\n\nDr Shannon Smithey\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Shannon Smithey is a full professor at Westminster College and has published articles in Comparative Political Studies\, the Journal of Politics\, and Law and Society Review. Dr. Smithey has expertise in Law and Courts\, Comparative Democratization\, and Public Law. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BS degree in Political Science and a BA in History. Nichols’ fully illustrated PowerPoint talk on the life of the well-known European explorer Christopher Columbus. Learn about his four voyages to the Caribbean and Central America. Reference will be made to his naming of islands as well as his impact impact on the Spanish Empire. Discover the long-term effect this had on not only European but Native American History. \n\n\n\nMost importantly this talk highlights the issues why Columbus no longer is held in the same esteem as in the recent past! \n\n\n\nBiographical Sketch \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. John A. Nichols\, professor emeritus of History\, retired from forty years of teaching at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. The author of six books and many articles\, he has given talks to various groups based on a variety of courses he taught on World History. His presentations are supported by PowerPoint slides of topics as diverse as the Native Americans who first inhabited the Caribbean islands and the conquest of the West Indies by Europeans to more modern events such as the building of the Panama Canal and tourism in the 21st Century.
